Main Page error reports

To report an error in current or upcoming Main Page content, please add it to the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of all or part of the text in question will help.
  • Please offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones: The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 14:36 on 31 May 2023), not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not give you a faster response; it is unnecessary as this page is not protected and will in fact cause problems if used here. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • Done? Once an error has been fixed, rotated off the Main Page or acknowledged not to be an error, the report will be removed from this page; please check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken, as no archives are kept.
  • No chit-chat: Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the relevant article or project talk page.
  • Please respect other editors. A real person wrote the blurb or hook for which you are suggesting a fix, or a real person noticed what they honestly believe is an issue with the blurb or hook that you wrote. Everyone is interested in creating the best Main Page possible; with the compressed time frame, there is sometimes more stress and more opportunities to step on toes. Please be civil to fellow users.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, consider first attempting to fix the problem there before reporting it here if necessary. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. In addition, upcoming content is typically only protected from editing 24 hours before its scheduled appearance; in most cases, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.

is "demise" considered a euphemism for death that would violate mos:euphemism? the word is not explicitly enumerated in that guideline, nor is it included in wikipedia's list of english-language euphemisms for death. however, wiktionary mentions that "demise" is a euphemism derived from the legal sense of the word, and a number of other sources also consider it a euphemism. i decided to ask here because i did not want to make the call unilaterally and i know that regulars here have more experience on the subject; i don't have a preference either way. dying (talk) 06:57, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No, I don’t think it is, particularly as this would leave two uses of “death” in quick succession. Synonyms are not euphemisms. - SchroCat (talk) 07:53, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dying: You could try the more compact and less repetitive Alfred's early death, along with that of his brother Prince Octavius six months later, deeply distressed the royal family..
In the preceding sentence, the description of a reaction to death being described as "harsh" looks wrong, although the article uses that word. "severely" might be more the intended meaning, going by the the article's text (Queen Charlotte "cried vastly" and was "very much hurt by her loss...). So perhaps, for the two sentences, Although the household did not go into mourning (it was not prescribed for royal children under seven), his parents took the loss severely. Alfred's early death, along with the demise of his brother Prince Octavius six months later, deeply distressed the royal family. Bazza (talk) 08:22, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Dying, you are amusing me. If there should be an expert on death euphemisms, that has got to be you! My suggestion, combining Bazza's suggestions, is: Although the household did not go into mourning (it was not prescribed for royal children under seven), his parents took the loss severely. Alfred's early death, along with that of his brother Prince Octavius six months later, deeply distressed the royal family. Schwede66 08:49, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree with this suggested rewording, except 'heavily' seems more idiomatic than 'severely' in this context. Modest Genius talk 11:01, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just chiming in. The word "demise" was new to me (foreigner). Any effort to avoid it is welcome. I an article about Alfred, do we have to mention his brother's death in the lead? Isn't the loss of one child enough to cause severe distress and heartbreak? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:24, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've taken the suggestion and switched to "that of", avoiding the word demise. As for Octavian, I think the idea there is to segue to the effects on the survivors, especially King George, the deaths of two of his sons, especially since George's difficulties with mental health are so well known.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:37, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

An earthquake registering 7.7 Mw struck Balochistan in the British Raj, now part of Pakistan, killing between 30,000 and 60,000 people.

British Raj was the government (cf. Federal government of the United States) or the era thereof. The territory itself was the British Indian Empire or British India for short (cf. Category:1935 in British India). Should be changed to struck Balochistan in British India. Gotitbro (talk) 10:22, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
