hover page preview no longer working

Postage stamps (fair use question)

I would like to include reference images of two postage stamps (one Australian, see: 90c Embryo Chair Stamp; one German, see: Serie "Design aus Deutschland" Herbert Lindinger: Stadtbahn Stuttgart) in articles about the designers whose work is fêted on the stamps (Marc Newson and Herbert Lindinger, respectively). Is this permitted fair use? My understanding is that the images would not be accepted on Commons (the rules for which are bewilderingly complex to a non-lawyer), however they may be acceptable on en:wp specifically to illustrate the claim that the designer's work was featured on a postage stamp. [NB: The photo of the S-DT8.12 Stuttgart light rail car used in the Lindnger article seems to be the actual source image for the stamp itself.] Appreciate any advice and guidance. Hi Cl3phact0 If it was to discuss the design. or designer, of the stamp itself, then as per WP:NFCI, that would be acceptable, "for identification of the stamp or currency, not the subjects depicted on it." However, you seem to want to use the stamp specifically to show the subject depicted on it, which is not allowed per WP:NFCI.
The answer also depends on the copyright laws of the country of origin - e.g. This stamp from India is allowed to be used to illustrate the subject because of the "National Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP) of the Government of India" - Unfortunately I do not know the copyright rules for stamps of Australia, or Germany, you would need to look for stamps from those countries to see if there is a similar permission. - Arjayay (talk) 11:45, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

The articles are both about designers, and in this case, the purpose of the image use would be to highlight the design of the stamps (which are, in both cases, part of series celebrating design itself). Also in both cases, the design of the stamp features an object designed by the designer in question, and in one case the design of the stamp was seems to be based on a photo found on Commons – thus my confusion about the fair use admissibility.) -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 12:00, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Cl3phact0 You seem to be confusing my statements. If the article is about the designer of the stamp itself, that is allowed per WP:NFCI. If the article is about the designer of the object depicted on the stamp, that is not allowed. - Arjayay (talk) 12:07, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

Forgive me if I wasn't clear. Let me rephrase: The claim in the articles is that there is a stamp which depicts the designers' work. I want to show the stamp itself to validate this claim (and also show the design of the stamp – not the design or designer of the object depicted). Thanks Arjayay, I am happy to ask again on the Media copyright questions forum you've kindly provided (the existence of which I was unaware of – so thank you for that too!). Please understand that I am not simply looking for the answer I'd (obviously) like to hear, I'm just looking for the right answer.

If one reads the WP:NFCI section 3. to the letter, then this is arguably a case of "identification of the stamp". That the "subjects depicted" also are relevant seems a function of the fact that in this case the raison d'être of the actual stamps is "Design" (notwithstanding who designed them), and the articles in question are about designers (who indubitably designed the objects depicted).

I am also happy to drop the matter altogether and not include these images in the articles if doing otherwise means protracted debate, tiresome defence of their inclusion, and the frustration of the eventual deletion of the uploads regardless (an experience I wish to avoid repeating – which is why I came here to ask before going to the trouble of sourcing and uploading the files, adding them to the articles, etc.). -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 14:51, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

In reference to what?), it shouldn't be too hard to find an appropriate place to include the quote if it is indeed relevant to the article. A good reference source for the quote is important too. I've reverted the latest edits by the IP as they were unconstructive. In the future, you can simply mark in the article's history which edits you'd like to revert to undo them all at once, no rollback needed. Help:Page history contains information on how to do this. disable the unsaved changes recovery?

When I edit a page, I frequently want to open a copy of the page to look at something. Whenever I do that, it "recovers" the changes from my first copy. This is unbelievably annoying. Is there a way to disable that behavior? Adoring nanny (talk) 16:40, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

@Adoring nanny There are a couple of things you could try. In the source editor you can toggle the "Preview" option top right in the editing window and it will a split-screen view where the right-hand part is the full article and you can scroll this to look at any part of the existing article (without any changes you might be making in the edit window, since they are not yet saved). Alternatively, on a PC I often open a separate browser tab and navigate to the article (or any other relevant page) which then behaves completely independently. @Adoring nanny: If you open the copy with a browser feature to duplicate the current tab then it's working as intended. It's done by the browser and not Wikipedia. Try to Ctrl-click the Edit tab instead. If you were making a section edit then it will edit the whole page. If you only want the section then Ctrl-click the left-most tab to view the rendered page, navigate to the section and click the section edit link. If you actually prefer the rendered page then just stop there. You can also try to open the copy as you usually do but then add & to the end of the url and press enter to reload. If this doesn't help then what is your browser and operating system, and exactly how do you open the copy? PrimeHunter (talk) 20:33, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

JackkBrown, for ease of promotion, people in the public eye sometimes want to use a simplified version or spelling of their name, so a commercial entity connected to them would deliberately use such an "incorrect" version/spelling.

Consider for example the Dutch racing driver Rinus van Kalmthout, who on moving to the USA to compete in the USF2000 Championship adopted 'Rinus VeeKay' because he knew Americans would have difficulty pronouncing his real surname correctly.

I see that Cullen pointed out your mistake, but for future reference: if you want to add something to an article but are not sure how, every article has an associated talk page where people can discuss how to improve the article, so in this case (according to what you thought) it would be Talk:Rob Estes. The other thing to note is that all information added to an article should come from a reliable published source, not from our own knowledge; so if we want to add something to an article, the very first thing we should do is look for a source, not rely on our own knowledge. In case it's not obvious, Tips, what Hoary has done is to start the wikilink with a colon (":"). This is a general feature - you can use it for files (eg [[:File:Tina Turner 50th Anniversary Tour.jpg]] giving File:Tina Turner 50th Anniversary Tour.jpg, and interlanguage links ([[:de:Wikipedia:Fragen zur Wikipedia]] displays as de:Wikipedia:Fragen zur Wikipedia). In fact it doesn't even matter if you use it when it is not needed, eg [[:Tina Turner]] is exactly the same as [[Tina Turner]]. ColinFine (talk) 08:21, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

[reply] button blocked by stalled “new section”

On one discussion page (only) all of the [reply] links are greyed out, and at the bottom there is a “new section” field that only has a “Subject” field and the word “Loading. . . ” under it.

It only affects one of my devices. Reloading the page doesn’t clear this. Logging out and back in doesn’t clear it. Very frustrating because loading the page always jumps to the bottom so section links are broken.  —Michael Z. 17:34, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

intimidating user

Hello,

I am trying to contribute. I opened an entry related to a specific medical condition that I have nearly two years ago. I tend to update it when I'm hospitalised. Another user has been flagging me and the comments are intimidating. I tried to push back, but they threatened me and said that I will face consequences for questing what feels like strong motives (and I found on their YouTube page a stated personal opinion against the story of entry I'm trying to create). I stated this and they flagged me for an insult/personal attack. It wasn't, it was a statement of fact while they are accusing me of all sorts of things, destroying my entry, flagging me. I don't want to be bullied on Wikipedia for trying to help others - especially when I am in hospital getting medical care after a removed organ! @WikiEd97531: You should know that Julius Senegal is right most of the time. There are WP:RULES which you ignore. He does not have an axe to grind against you, but he has an axe to grind against original research and against WP:PRIMARY medical studies. His language is atrocious! He assumed lots of things and made horrible accusations, then, it turns out he has the publicly stated bias. He is intimidating a user who is trying to contribute. NO need to excessively troll me. I am trying to contribute and fix things without a full on assault. I was hit with a lot of allegations and accusations. I was asked to explain myself, and I did. I tried to defend myself and got attacked more. I asked for info and help in each post as a new user. I said 'put the citation' and I will fix it. No need to beat the horse here... this is supposed to be volunteer help. I did not 'insult' the other user. I simply stated something that was online (publicly available) due to the accusations and strength of wording being put onto me. I would also gently suggest that if your goal is merely to provide information about this medical condition, a website that you own and control, or social media, would be better avenues to do that. There is no assault in pointing out that we have some rules especially for topics in medicine. On the discussion page I clearly stated what is wrong and that in a polite way.

I don't speculate about the motives why WikiEd97531 is trying to highlight this product, maybe he has some good experiences with it. However, that doesn't matter and this is a delicate topic with the risk of drifting towards a commercial advertisement. If this product is good, we will have robust sources clearly confirming this. To expand on Liliana's answer: Wikipedia is not interested in "personalities" or "celebrities". It is interested in subjects which meet its own criteria for notability, which is basically about whether there has been enough independent material published about the subject. Some articles are indeed about "personalities", but being popular or prominent or wealthy does not of itself guarantee that there can be an article. Furthermore, every article should be a neutral summary of what those independent sources say. Blackbody energy density

In blackbody radiation, how do you go from measuring radiation power per unit area to energy density per unit volume? I am looking for this formula and one of the first publications that uses it, by Wilhelm Wien for example. Two questions

I have two questions concerning events:

1. Would a 1-year anniversary article from a local news source be enough to establish WP:LASTING coverage for an event that has been covered in national news sources? I understand that anniversary articles on the 10th anniversary of an event would count, but I'm not sure what the cutoff is. An example: [2]

2. I have a bit of an issue with a news article that has been posted on a blog. The blog's creator was a former journalist, and I have no reason not to believe that he didn't write the article for a reliable news source. However, I can only find the article on his blog. Is the source reliable? Here is the blog post for reference. [3]

Clint Eastwood

Why on the Clint Eastwood page are there several jobs in the professions within the infobox (actor, director, film producer and composer), while in the initial text there are "only" two (actor and director)? On the other hand, on the Leonardo Pieraccioni page and Daniele Luchetti pages, the jobs are the same both in the infobox and in the initial text; finally, on thie page Vincenzo Salemme there is only one job in the infobox, while there are four in the initial text. There are no rigid 'rules' specifying such details: our 6 million-plus articles were created, and have been edited, over a couple of decades by tens to hundreds of thousands of different people, who each decided to write and amend in a particular and often different way within our broad guidelines, which I'm sure by now you are somewhat familiar with.

The 'initial text' or 'Lede' first paragraph of any article is only supposed to summarise the most important points of the rest of the article (including the infobox). In the case of Clint Eastwood, his main activities have been as an actor and director – that he has also produced some movies and has composed music for some movies are less prominent facets of his career which (I presume) appear as details somewhere in the body of the article. (I haven't stopped to read it, but I was certainly aware of them.)

Similarly, creators and subsequent editors have all made their own individual judgement calls on what to include in the infoboxes. So long as they are not actively innacurate, there is no problem with this.

There is no way that over 6 million articles in a huge crowdsourced project are going to conform absolutely to every single detail of a (nonexistent) single rigid template (in the general sense), and there is no way that any single editor can make a significant impact on this: frankly, there are more productive uses of anyone's time. By all means correct actual errors, but you seem to be getting sucked in to a self-imposed mission that is both impossible and pointless. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.199.210.77 (talk) 21:37, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

@JackkBrown: Hi there! Template:Infobox person#Parameters states that the |occupation= parameter should have "Occupation(s) as given in the lead." MOS:LEADBIO has guidance on what belongs in the lead. However (and I've said this several times), the best place to discuss this is on each article's talk page. Notice glitch

Jauerback suggested I come here. I'm asking if anyone's aware of a notice glitch that appears whenever someone edits articles, as in there's always one notice added. I cannot find anything about the Australian Pygmy race. I have three pages of facts I can email to you. I am 85 and not capable of investigation. How do I send three images of written history pages with two photographs of extinct Australian pygmies?

Seems like a decent source, and makes me think that the WP:NPOV way to include it in Indigenous Australians is to not include it. May be possible to make a Talgai Skull style (ish) article about it as an outdated theory (perhaps there are some on-WP lists or categories for such things). This is a difficult and controversial area. That source you found is from Keith Windschuttle, an Australian historian who now edits the conservative journal Quadrant. There is a certain slant to his work. He argues that the Stolen generations is a myth, and that the White Australia Policy wasn't really all that racist. Before he was editor of Quadrant, the paper you found reference to was published in it, in 2002. In brief, it claims that there was a pygmy race in Australia, and that the ancestors of current Aboriginal people largely replaced them. This, of course, allows those opposing land rights claims to say that the current Aboriginal people were not the first owners, and thus deserve nothing. Windschuttle's is not a common view today. It's very hard to find any other research with a similar conclusion. Indeed, it seems impossible to find anything at all about Windschuttle's claimed co-author, Tim Gillin. I don't know how this helps our enquirer. Nor do I know how we can handle the "24 pages of written history" he says he has. HiLo48 (talk) 07:49, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

@Ilinastoyanova Assuming this is about User:Ilinastoyanova/Sample page. There are several problems here, one of the minor is that a page like that will not be automatically published, you have to actually submit it, see Wikipedia:So_you_made_a_userspace_draft#Ready!.

Why can´t the people influenced by an economist be seen on their page
