Publicly-traded companies face huge challenges as they straddle traditional values of short-term profitability with the pressure to contribute to societal and ecological health. It’s becoming increasingly evident to executive management that business as usual is not an option.

Navigating the territory between the traditional and contemporary is a topic Dawna is passionate about, so this interview features the three editors of newly-released book Corporate Stewardship: Achieving Sustainable Effectiveness. In it, Susan A. Mohrman, Jim O’Toole and Edward E. Lawler III have assembled a variety of thinkers on corporate stewardship and sustainability to reflect on what’s needed for business to achieve sustainable effectiveness.

In the interview they talk about:

  • The societal pressures and changing ecological imperative for a higher role.
  • The changing role of business in society.
  • The options available to companies in responding to these pressures.
  • The prognosis for what lies ahead.
  • The value of achieving a broader outlook on the opportunities with respect to risk.

Susan A. Mohrman is a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. James O'Toole is Executive Director, Neely Center for Ethical Leadership, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, where he previously held the University Associates’ Chair at the University of Southern California’s business school. Edward E. Lawler III is Distinguished Professor of Business and Director of the Center for Effective Organizations in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He also founded and became director of the University's Center for Effective Organizations.

Dawna Jones, the show's host, believes that by raising awareness and understanding we can make a quantum leap to a new level of innovation in business - but it has to be done collectively.

What better way to do it than by provoking the evolution of how you see yourself and your role!
