I've read about the demise of men in the workplace in a number of news sources in the past few months; hell, who knows? Perhaps it's a good thing that we enjoy being the minority for a little while. After all, after some of the brilliant work we've done to get our economy in its current shape (yes, we'll give the ladies some credit for helping us), we deserve a little time on the naughty step.
Yet, this may still work out to our advantage as it seems more and more men are staying home to raise the children.
Knowing a thing or two about working and having children, I would personally love the opportunity to stay at home and enjoy a new kind of challenge. Quite frankly, it would likely be more difficult than my current job, although there is the benefit of no commute.
However, I don't know how practical it would be. The outrageous cost of living in many, if not most, parts of the world, means that just getting by requires a two-income household.
So while I applaud these fathers for wanting to spend more time in their children's lives, I have to think that this arrangement would only be a temporary one. I just cannot see most men turning down a future offer of a lucrative job to stay at home. It could be a good temporary solution while job hunting or when laid off, but as a full-time commitment, it simply costs too much on the average family!
